It’s rare that a one-size-fits-all recommendation can be made in medicine. However, all of us require certain nutrients for optimal health and getting enough of them through diet alone isn’t always possible. As such, here are some of my top prescribed supplements everyone should consider.
Vitamin D. The ‘sunshine vitamin’ is essential for children’s growing bones and for adults’ aging ones to prevent osteoporosis (bone thinning). Being deficient in vitamin D can be particularly dangerous for seniors because it can lead to hip fractures, loss of independence and even increased mortality. It also has purported health benefits for mood, immune function and cancer prevention. For adults, a supplement of 2,000 IU (international units) is a good place to start. Unfortunately as Canucks, we can’t rely on the sun for much of a natural vitamin D boost.
