Happiness is not about health. It’s about mindset.

A 50-year-old woman is diagnosed with high blood pressure. It’s in her genes: Her mother had a heart attack in midlife. Knowing this, she prepares by cycling regularly, eating a healthy diet and taking her medication.

Despite her efforts, my patient suffers a heart attack. Throughout her hospital stay, she remains cheerful and recovers well. Others in similar circumstances, however, become hopeless and depressed, suffering in mind and body.

Why?

It’s all in your frame of mind, which can (fortunately) be reframed. This is an underlying tenet of stoicism, a Greek philosophy that can be summed up pretty quickly: Your happiness isn’t dependent on your health. It’s dependent on your mindset.
